2014 Digestive Health Congressional Call-In Day

On Tuesday, June 17, 2014 people from all across the nation came together for the 2014 Digestive Health Congressional Call-In Day. On this day, the digestive health community is asked people to take a few minutes of their time to reach out to their Congressional Representative about a very important issue. By joining together on one day, our voices are amplified with one clear message. You can still join them in taking action at www.IFFGD.org/HR842action

Functional gastrointestinal and motility disorders (FGIMDs) affect 1 in 4 people in the U.S.  Digestive health advocates had several key messages for Congress about FGIMDs:

  • Functional GI and motility disorders are conditions that involve improper functioning of the nerves, muscles, and related mechanisms of the digestive tract.
  • Most FGIMDs are chronic and some can be fatal.
  • These conditions are often misdiagnosed or mistreated.
  • The disorders affect men and women of all ages, and many emerge during childhood.
  • Currently treatment options for FGIMDs are extremely limited and focus on symptoms management, no cures are known.

The digestive health community is asking Members of the U.S. House of Representatives to support The Functional GI & Motility Disorders Research Enhancement Act (H.R. 842). This landmark legislation will raise critical awareness for chronic digestive conditions and expand research into treatments and cures.

This outreach helped set the stage for advocate to arrive in Washington, DC on June 23-24, 2014 to meet with Members of Congress as part of the 2014 DHA Advocacy Day
